short-short story in letter format

To Whom It May Concern at the Center for Disease Control Boston Massachusetts,

I’m starting to suspect that my younger brother may be turning into an octopus.

It all started on October the 5th, 2010 when my brother stopped by my apartment for a study break. I made him some grilled cheese and chocolate milk as good older sisters are prone to do. It was then that I noticed a purple-y splotch forming near his right temple. I thought nothing of it at the time, thinking that it was probably just a leftover paint stain from one of his classes. He’s in art school, you see.

However the splotch was still there a week later. When I asked him about it he had also noticed it, and several other splotches appearing all over his person; one was forming in the inner part of his elbow, on his hip bone, one on his heel. He didn’t think too much of it at the time, so I didn’t press it. I reminded myself that he is old enough to take care of his own medical issues. I let it go.

On November the 23rd in addition to developing more purple splotches I noticed that his head seemed more…ovular, than it usually was. It wasn’t overly unusual, but it was just slightly more misshapen than I remembered it being. It was as if his forehead was stretching itself out. I also noticed that his joints seemed more swollen. Again, it was not obviously unusual, but simply different than what I was used to. It was like all the angles in his body were being streamlined into a softer shape; it’s not like he gained weight, he just became less linear. Again, I brought it up with my brother. Again, he insisted it was nothing.

December 23rd, 2010, I noticed that his movements were somewhat unusual. His limbs don’t really bend anymore, it’s hard to describe. He doesn’t really walk; he just sort of undulates from place to place. His back is bent over because it’s hard for his body to support his head, which has become an oversized sort of oval. Also his eyes were further apart and his nose looked like it was sinking into his skin.

It is now January and his condition doesn’t seem to be improving. Even worse, he has become almost sticky to the touch and he is almost entirely encased in purple.

I’m really not sure what to do at this point; perhaps this is a symptom of some sort of recent outbreak. Are there other young men out there that are starting to turn into octopus? Is there some sort of support group? Could I maybe be referred to a specialist?

All I know is that this is starting to become weird, and I’m scared that someday soon I’ll see some sort of squishy, purple creature inhabiting the spot where my younger brother used to be, flopping around listlessly on my mother’s carpet.

Any information you have would be very much appreciated.

Thank you.
